Form I-131: Application for Travel Document

Form I-131 covers three related travel documents: Advance Parole (for adjustment applicants and other non-immigrants without a valid visa for return), Refugee Travel Documents (for refugees and asylees), and Reentry Permits (for LPRs planning extended trips abroad).

What Form I-131 Is

Form I-131 covers three separate travel documents that let non-citizens leave the United States and return without abandoning their pending immigration application or LPR status.

Advance Parole is the most common — filed by adjustment applicants (I-485), asylum applicants, DACA recipients, and Temporary Protected Status holders who don't have a currently valid nonimmigrant visa for return. Refugee Travel Documents replace passports for refugees and asylees. Reentry Permits protect LPRs from being deemed to have abandoned their residence during extended trips of one to two years.

Filing Fee

The USCIS filing fee is $630 for most Advance Parole applications. Filing I-131 concurrently with Form I-485 waives the I-131 fee. Refugee Travel Documents are $135 for applicants age 16+ and $105 for children under 16. Reentry Permits are $630.

Frequently Asked Questions About I-131

Not typically. H-1B and L-1 workers with valid visas can travel abroad and return on their existing visa without triggering abandonment of a pending I-485. Consult an attorney — some situations still call for AP as a safety net.
