EB-1B — Outstanding Professor or Researcher

The EB-1B is a first-preference, employment-based green card for outstanding professors and researchers with international recognition in their academic field. Requires an employer sponsor and a permanent research or tenure-track offer.

What Is the EB-1B Visa?

The EB-1B is a first-preference employment-based immigrant visa category for outstanding professors and researchers who are internationally recognized for their achievements in a particular academic area. It sits in the same high-priority EB-1 group as the EB-1A but is built for academics whose careers are anchored to a sponsoring institution.

Unlike the EB-1A, the EB-1B requires an employer sponsor and a qualifying job offer, but it carries a lower evidentiary bar — international recognition rather than the sustained acclaim demanded of the EB-1A. Because it is an EB-1 category, priority dates are typically current for most countries and premium processing is available.

Key Benefits of the EB-1B Visa

  • No PERM labor certification required.
  • Lower bar than EB-1A — international recognition, not sustained acclaim.
  • Priority dates usually current for most countries of birth.
  • Premium processing available (15 business days).
  • Spouse (E-14) and unmarried children under 21 (E-15) included.
  • Direct path to a green card without a temporary work visa stage.

Who Qualifies for an EB-1B Visa?

The EB-1B is designed for tenured or tenure-track professors and for researchers in permanent positions at universities, research institutions, or private employers with an established research department. Typical petitioners include principal investigators, assistant and associate professors, senior research scientists, and lab directors who have at least three years of teaching or research experience in their academic field.

The sponsoring employer must offer a permanent position — a tenured or tenure-track teaching role, or a comparable research position with no fixed termination date. A private employer must additionally show it employs at least three full-time researchers and has documented accomplishments in the field.

EB-1B Eligibility Requirements

Beyond the job offer and three years of experience, the petitioner must satisfy at least two of the six USCIS-defined criteria below to establish international recognition.

  1. 1. Major Prizes or Awards

Receipt of major prizes or awards for outstanding achievement in the academic field.

  2. 2. Membership in Select Associations

Membership in associations that require outstanding achievement of their members, as judged by recognized experts.

  3. 3. Published Material About the Applicant's Work

Published material in professional publications written by others about the applicant's work in the academic field.

  4. 4. Judging the Work of Others

Participation, individually or on a panel, as a judge of the work of others in the same or an allied academic field.

  5. 5. Original Scientific or Scholarly Contributions

Evidence of original scientific or scholarly research contributions to the academic field.

  6. 6. Authorship of Scholarly Books or Articles

Authorship of scholarly books or articles, in journals with international circulation, in the academic field.
